![]() We have our rationalizations when we do bad things. ![]() We all think we’re heroes, we all think we’re good guys. That’s a comic book kind of thing, where the Red Skull gets up in the morning “What evil can I do today?” Real people don’t think that way. And we all have, even characters who are thought of to be bad guys, who are bad guys, in some objective sense, don’t think of themselves as bad guys. So, you trying to see the world through their eyes to understand why they do the things they do. I'm always reminded of that quote by Martin when he was interviewed by Observation Deck in 2013: Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen both might be villains to us as readers by the end of the series, but in their own actions and thoughts they won't be. It must have been such a surprise to finish the prologue and see his name, and then to read the arc he goes on, just wow. There's nothing else that's new revealed in the interview, except that he kept Jaime's POV a secret. I'm probably reading too far into this one choice of words in 1999 but either way I thought I'd share it. And since Ramsay already burnt Winterfell at the time of the interview that one specific plotline was abandoned, so he can't have meant that. But it's also interesting to consider the pending 'rivalry' between him and Jon in the original outline. Perhaps he meant that since he was a Lannister he was the villain in the eyes of the Starks, or that he was an anti-hero, or maybe it was because of where his story was heading (especially in ADWD). This might not mean much considering it's from 1999, but it's odd that he would call Tyrion at the time of A Clash of Kings 'the villain'. He's the villain of course, but hey, there's nothing like a good villain. Martin: I've got to admit I kind of like Tyrion Lannister. Interviewer: Do you have a favorite character? A post on tumblr linked to this interview GRRM gave with Amazon after the release of A Clash of Kings which included this interesting answer.
